We’ve already experienced several hot and even extra hot days this summer. As the weather warms up it’s important to stay hydrated during the summer months. Sometimes we need a little more than water to make sure our bodies are getting what they need for replenishing electrolytes. We can loose electrolytes when we exert or sweat a lot during exercise or even just being exposed to hot or extreme heat. Electrolytes such as potassium, sodium and magnesium are foundational for the health of our bodies. Electrolytes help maintain healthy blood pressure, nerve signaling, and muscle functioning.
Symptoms of low electrolytes can include:
Dizziness
Headaches
Muscles cramps or Weakness
Fatigue/ Lethargy
Irregular heartbeat
Most commercial electrolyte drinks have a lot of sugar and artificial ingredients. Two of my favorite natural electrolytes drinks to recommend to my patients are coconut water and an apple cider vinegar drink (recipe below). Coconut water naturally includes potassium, sodium and magnesium and is low in sugar(1). You can also make your own natural electrolyte drink at home!
Natural electrolyte drink
8 oz Water
1 tsp Maple Syrup
1-2 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar (raw and unfiltered with the “mother” in it)
pinch of or 1/8 tsp Himalayan Salt
1-2 Tbs Fresh Lemon or Lime Juice
We hope these tips help you stay hydrated and feeling good this summer! Another great way to stay balanced this summer is with Acupuncture. We hope to see you soon!
